Being a young person in today's world, society pressures and influences the images of the youth. Many young people want to be viewed as beautiful to the outside world. If they don't look how people want them to look, their self esteem is lowered. The media also plays a huge factor in how young people perceive themselves and are viewed to society.
I feel as though that video is very disturbing for how young children look towards their own race. I feel this discription of how black people are bad and evil by little african-american children is due to the portration of how black people are obnoxious, aggressive, hateful, and strongly oppinionated people. This portration by the media is what is confusing young children into thinking that african-amerians are evil and shouldn't be thought of as good, nice people. For when the children were asked to pick up the doll that was considered to be the nicer doll, most of them picked up the white doll and called the black doll mean. I also agree with the what the black girls were saying about how society is forcing its many cultures to black teenagers to the point where they are forgetting their own heritage and culture.
After viewing this video for the second time =] i believe that it is very sad that yong woman in todays society look at themselves the way they do. You shouldnt base your qualities upon your race, you are who you are. Being a certain race doesnt mean you are less of a person or more of a person, that all depends on how you value yourself as an individual. These problems occur because of the media. Girls see how other females look in the media and want to be just like them; because they are the "ideal" girl. If everyone was made to look exactly alike then it would have happened that way; but thats not the case your are made with your own uniqueness.
After viewing the document "A girl like me", I think that children nowadays really do react like that. I was very surprise when I saw the young children picking up the opposite doll(s) (race) and say that it is the "nicer" one. I mean where did they learn that from? They should learn to love who they are and what they are. I mean they are still young and should not think like that. I the reason why they responded they way they did is because, how society today image African Americans.
I found the video to be both disturbing and upsetting. It was shocking to believe that even African American kids viewed their own race as being bad while the white babies were considered nice. Its a shame that kids so young should be exposed to false beliefs, especially when its about their own race. As a young person myself, I place my trust and learn from those around me, and for someone even younger they depend even more heavily upon the adults in their environment. They are so impressionable that they just adopt what they are exposed to. They do not have the capability or need to filter what they pick up from the media, it just sticks with them.
after viewing the video i find very disappointing that african american women are so unsatisfied with their ethnicity. I love eveything about my self from the color of my skin to my coarse hair and there is nothing that anyone can say or do to change my mind. i think every one should be proud of their race because its abpart of the reson you are who you are and have the things that you are fortunate enough to have however, in other cases people are the exact opposite of their race but thats not a bad thing no one should be judged based on there race and no should feel obligated to satisfy the ignorance around them bby change the things on the outside about themselves
Personally, the movie made me mad. To see little children who believe that their own race is bad and white people are good is just sad. That should give people an idea of the environment the kids are being raised in and the thing that those kids hear probably daily. The shoulod be raised to love them selves no matter what they look like..and as for them judging people based on thier skin color, they should be learning to judge people on how they act not wat they look like. An another thing that upset me was them basically giving black females a certain image. Some people thin that all black females have big brests and big butts when thats not completely true. Just because you know someones race doesnt mean that you can automatically know what assets they may or maynot have.
After viewing the documentary, "A girl like me" i wasnot shocked about the things the young ladies said. Today's society pushes the image that tall, thin, light complexion, and straight hair is the only way to be. With such standards put out people push to be people and things they will never be. They are more concerened about the way people view them on the outside, and not in. This is a terrible way for children to grow up; living around such behavior will cause the child to strive for the same goals and not accept themselves as they are. As an african american, i can honestly say i would not change a thing about myself, and it is because not only self assurance but also encouragement from others. people should do more encouraging others about their assets than trying to point out things they believe are wrong, or different.
After viewing the video "a girl like me", it surprised me how 15 out of 21 kids would choose white doll over black doll just because it's prettier. If they think about the doll that way, what they think about themself? what i think what they need is self motivation and self confident to do what they believe in.I don't believe in racism and hate crime. I believe as long as they work hard to do the right thing and be the top of the top, respect will follows and it will reflect among the minority. -Bao Luong from 1st period
After seeing this video made me wonder why little kids think their race is bad. Its ashame how beautiful young girls who think of themselves as "ugly" change how they look so other people can like them better. Or so they can fit in with society. We see it every day and its not just girls, guys are dressing different ways too. Thier going from saggy jeans to tight ones. But it effects girls the most and children are seeing how their bothers or sisters are changing to make other people happy so they are gonna wanna do it to.
after watching "a grl like me" i learned that skin color is really becoming an issue. They did an experiment in the video about which doll the children would prefer, the white doll or the blcak doll. I was extreemly supprised that almost ever one of the 20 sum kids chose the white doll with the exception of about 4 or 5. I think that many of the girls featured in the documentary have self concous issues or they have heard soo much criticism that they are starting to actuly beleive some of it. I think that they should be happy with the skin they are in because "BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL" No matter what shade it is be cause every race has diffferet shade of peopl but that dosent make them less white, black ect...
After watching "A Girl Like Me" i realized that not everybody is satisfied with the color of their skin. The experiment showed alot of insight on how the young kids think about which skin color is prettier. I found it crazy that mostly all of the kids chose the white doll because she was pretty & they said that the black doll wasn't pretty like her. I think that that comes from their parents not telling them to be proud of their skin color. I believe the girls showed in the video need to realize that they look the way that they do for a reason and that they should be proud of what they have because in some place, some where there's some girl who whishes that she was like her.
"A Girl like Me" was an ok preview; it was basically for somebody that didn’t know them. Being a child that grew up around girls it wasn't that inspiring because they didn't really explain on how they overcome those problems that people say. So that's why I say it's not really for kids younger than them, it's more like just for your information. I can say it’s true though but its girls like them that listen to others what they want, how they like girls and what they think they should look like based on their skin compaction.
I found the video "a girl like me" very interesting. I found most of the things the girls said to be true. When they talked about the lighter skin and the darker skin.I was very shocked when the children had to pick which doll they prefered, but I was even more shocked when they called the black doll bad. It was kind of upsetting and made me wonder who is teaching them.Overall it made me think about what the girls were saying about their race.
