Tuesday Tasks - Black History Editorial and Slave Rebellions
This morning is a two fold task - first of all I would like you to write an editorial position paper stating whether or not the United States should continue celebrating Black History Month. Be sure to cite any other sources you might use. SUBMIT IT TO ME VIA EMAIL.
Part two is on the cLc page but I am not sure how it will work for you. It is called "riots and rebellions".
When the African American slaves took up arms against their masters, it was called a Rebellion. Later, when Blacks are fighting for equality against their oppressors, it is called Rioting. For this part, I'd like you to research a slave insurrection (rebellion) - same rules as the biography. Be creative!
Today I'd like to see your topic and the beginnings of an outline/prospectus of your presentation.
Hope to see you Wednesday. (unless we are snowed in!)

Black History Month
First of all, good morning. I haven't moved off of the sofa much since Saturday morning except to shovel some snow. Here is your assignment... check out the slide show here and compare that to what you think your top 5 black history moments are. Then read this article, and tell me what your opinions are about Henry Louis Gates, Jr and his opinions about Black History Month. Have a great day.

Slavery Differences
From the most recent reading in Franklin, you learned that slaves were brought to the New World and either went to the Caribbean or what is currently the East Coast of the United States and Canada. These colonies were either in hands of the British, Dutch, French or Spanish. How did the colonial settlement create differences in the way Africans were treated in the New World? Create a table that identifies these differences and makes this information easy for you to use.

Dr. King Holiday
Good Morning!
I hope you enjoyed the long weekend. This past weekend celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Read his obituary here (I know, it seems long). Write about 3 events that you were not aware of that occurred in Dr. King's life.

I am Sean Bell
On November 25, 2006, undercover NYPD officers fired at least 50 rounds of bullets into a car carrying three UNARMED men of African American and Latino decent; killing one, SEAN BELL and seriously wounding two others. Bell age 23 was scheduled to be married on that fateful day.Three of the five detectives involved in the shooting went to trial on charges ranging from manslaughter to reckless endangerment. All were found not guilty. The incident has sparked fierce criticism of the NYPD as the city faces yet another murder of an unarmed African American man at the hands of those expected to protect and serve.“I AM SEAN BELL, black boys speak” is a short form documentary from Wildseed Films that highlights the voices of young black boys between the ages of 11 and 13 years old growing up in New York City. They speak openly and honestly about their reaction to the Sean Bell tragedy as well as their fears and hopes as they approach manhood in a city where the lives of young black men are often cut short, too often, and too soon.
1. What is your reaction?
2. Do You see any parallels between this incidents and any in your community?
3. What is the significance of 'grass roots community involvement'?
